About Riverbend
How a 40,000 sq ft West Sacramento warehouse became Northern California's open-box appliance outlet.
Riverbend started in 2009 with one box truck and a theory: the appliance industry throws away enormous value the moment a carton is opened.
A refused delivery, a cancelled remodel, a returned online order, a showroom floor model — once the box is opened, the manufacturer can no longer sell that unit as new. It is mechanically identical to the one still on the retail floor at full price. It just cannot be called new anymore.
We buy those units by the truckload.
What we actually do
Every unit that comes off a pallet goes through the same three steps before it is listed:
- Test. Refrigeration is temperature-logged over a full cycle. Laundry runs a wash and a dry. Ranges heat every element and burner. Dishwashers run a complete cycle with the door seals checked.
- Grade. A for no visible damage, B for a visible mark on a surface that is usually hidden after install, C for obvious cosmetic damage. The grade goes on the tag and on the listing.
- Photograph. Not a stock image — the actual unit, including a close-up of the actual blemish. If we are wrong about a unit, we would rather you find out from the photo than from the delivery truck.
What we do not do
We do not sell a Grade C unit as a Grade A. We do not photograph the good side and hope. We do not tell you an appliance is "like new" when it has a dent you would notice.
The whole business depends on the grades meaning something. A customer who feels burned once never comes back — and in this business, the customers who come back are the ones furnishing rental units, flipping houses, and sending their neighbors.
